About This Photo

Byodoin Phoenix Hall (鳳凰堂, Hōō-dō) stands on a small island surrounded by a pond in Uji, Kyoto Prefecture. The structure features symmetrical wing corridors extending from the central hall, vermilion-painted columns and railings, dark grey ceramic-tiled hip-and-gable roofs with pronounced upward curves, and gilded phoenix ornaments at the roof ridgelines. Through the central opening of the main hall, a large seated statue is visible inside. The entire building is reflected in the still water surface, creating a near-perfect mirror image in the foreground. A stone-edged embankment, trimmed low shrubs, pine trunks, and dormant brown ground cover occupy the right side of the frame, while bare deciduous branches appear at the upper left. A clear blue sky with scattered white clouds fills the background. Byodoin was originally built as a Fujiwara clan villa and converted into a Buddhist temple in 1052 CE during the late Heian period. The Phoenix Hall was completed in 1053 CE and is designated a National Treasure of Japan. It is one of the few remaining examples of Heian-period Pure Land Buddhist architecture and was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994 as part of the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto. The composition is a slightly oblique frontal view that places the full facade at center frame, with the pond reflection occupying roughly the lower third of the image. This image suits editorial use in travel guides covering Kyoto or Uji, cultural heritage publications, and academic materials on Heian-period Buddhist architecture. The blue-sky background and stable horizontal framing also support use in tourism websites and textbook illustrations.
